Recycling computers in the US

Recycling computers in the USIt's a logistical nightmare. Trying to balance cost against environmental consideration. The recycling industry has exploded onto the scene throughout the western world. With dwindling resources and high raw materials prices, we're being forced to recycle more, but in the world of Computers, this means a lot of transportation to get obsolete household computers recycled. We were recently contacted by a Company based in India with a view to the logistical issues associated with recycling computer hardware. The idea was to transport computers from householders back to a central location for processing. The problem? Balancing the cost of recycling a computer system against the cost of transporting the old hardware. In America, many recycling companies have implemented a 'ship to' service for old or obsolete hardware. It's a great way of cutting down on costs. If you can off-set the cost of employees and overheads against the cash value of old computers and their constituent component value, then you're at least breaking even. You can then offer a service free of charge on the basis that the old hardware is shipped to you at cost to the consumer. The logistical nightmare starts when you try to collect the computers using in-house employees. The costs of drivers and vehicles can add up quickly and result in negative equity. Off-setting these costs means that the recycling company has to charge the people wanting to dispose of their old hardware. Government run schemes use local municipal waste collection points to containerize the old computers, which the recycler then collects, but with some being 400 miles from the municipal waste collection point, the cost of driving that distance can quickly mount up. In effect, the costs associated with these collections have to be passed onto the government run authorities running the waste collection centers. With America being so large, there's also the carbon cost, where driving such a distance results in what is known as a 'carbon footprint' being put on the old computers, before they've even been recycled. This footprint remains with the constituent materials when they're used to manufacture something else. So even before the new product ends up in the shops, its' got a pretty large carbon footprint associated with it. In America and it's constituent states, it's the author's belief that recycling of computers really has to be considered state wide rather than Country wide. If a recycler is in New York, then his or her business shouldn't stray over the state line. That way, costs and energy consumption are kept low and the carbon produced by the business will remain low.

You've got spelling and grammar checkers on your laptop computer, so you're all set to crank out the perfect sales letter while you're on the road. But Chandra Clarke and Terence Johnson of the online editing service would urge you to not hit the "print" button just yet. Those spelling and grammar checkers can make mistakes, and even one typo could not only ruin the impact of your letter but reflect poorly on you and your company.Written marketing materials are often the first impression prospective customers have of a company. And prospects can be very unforgiving of those little typos. In the article "Ethos and Error: How Business People React to Errors," University of South Alabama English professor Larry Beason found that mistakes in written materials create confusion regarding meaning and harm the image of the writer and the writer's company. The typos often reflect on more than the writer's communication skills, Beason said. The people he interviewed called sloppy writers "hasty," "uninformed," "careless" and "uncaring." "If you don't care about your work," wrote one of the respondents, "why should I care about you and your business?"But carefully proofreading your work may not be enough - studies show that people often miss their own typos. According to the studies, you see what you expect to see in your own writing, rather than what's actually there. Another person, or an editing service like Scribendi, can provide a fresh set of eyes.Scribendi offers a variety of services, including proofreading, editing and translation. Clients upload their files to Scribendi's Web site and download their documents after the editors are done correcting and polishing. The editors come from a variety of backgrounds, so they're familiar with their clients' fields. In addition to correcting grammar, spelling, flow and consistency, they explain word usage issues and standard writing practices, so clients learn how to improve their own writing. When it comes to making a great first impression, Clarke and Johnson believe no project is too small. The image you create with a short press release, they say, is as important as a deal-closing presentation.

Leverage Your Time With Organization

Leverage Your Time With Organization

I like to earn money and while Im opening letters, paying bills, or filing paper Im not doing what I like. Here are a few simple things I do that may help to streamline your filing system and get you more time.I purchased a good, used filing cabinet at a fraction of the retail cost from the local government asset recovery store where they sell used equipment. Strangely enough, Ive spent more on folders than on the cabinet. The cabinet I settled on is a 2 drawer horizontal type about 27 inches high, 36 inches wide, and 18 inches deep. The top drawer I use for tracking current activity by day and month. The bottom drawer I use to track clients by year. I use colored legal size hanging folders to separate the activities.I marked 31 blue folders with numbers from 1 to 31 for each day of the month. As mail comes in, I open it and decide when action is required. I file the important part for the day of action, trash the rest, and usually my desk is clear in less than 5 minutes.Boy, do I ever like empty folder days and I make them by putting as many things to do into the folders on days I have to pay bills. The fewer days of pushing paper the better. When the action day arrives I look in the folder, budget my time for whats required, and do it as quickly as possible. I write the checks and file the rest in the monthly section, then move the daily folder to the back of the cue with tomorrows date left first in line. The monthly folders are in three groups, paid, due, and received. The paid group is filed in two ways. The first way uses grey folders labeled with the name of the creditor like bank, credit card, etc. The second group uses yellow folders labeled with the months of the year. The yellow folders track my day-to-day receipts of expenses for the month including petty cash purchases. The due group includes 1 orange folder marked current and 3 red folders labeled 30, 60 and 90 days. When I issue an invoice or get statement of earnings from an affiliate program a paper copy goes to the orange file. When payment is received, the invoice or statement is put into a green colored file named for the client or affiliate program that paid. If payment is not made, then the paper record is transferred to the folder marked 30, 60, or 90 days. I take different action according to how delinquent the account is and obviously try to keep the red folders as small as possible.

A Peek into Business Process Re-engineering

A Peek into Business Process Re-engineering

Business process re-engineering (BPR) sounds esoteric at best, and maybe a little pretentious. Wouldnt it be simpler to say business process change? Most people understand what a business process is but when you combine it with re-engineering, it suddenly sounds vague. The ProSci-sponsored BPR Online Learning Center calls a business process a set of activities that transform a set of inputs into a set of outputs (goods or services) for another person or process using people and tools. It is simple. The way we interpret that is:

  • there are many ways of doing business,
  • when one of those ways does not work or is considered to be ineffective it has to be improved,
  • certain elements are introduced to make it better (inputs),
  • those elements translate into a better product or service,
  • that product or service is supposed to serve another person (a customer, a supplier, a partner)
  • Thats elementary enough, but why do business processes have to be re-engineered?Its All About the Customer (and Competition)The philosophy behind business process re-engineering is to please the customer. By delighting him, we get to keep him, turning him into a loyal disciple.Rivals have a sneaky way of snatching customers away from us. Its not because this world is full of sly and evil people, its because we tend to sit on our bottoms and think that weve finally got it made. Weve become lax.Business process improvement, according to ProSci, is not be confused with business process re-engineering. Instead of improving on current processes, the re-engineering concept says that because the technique is no longer viable, it has to be replaced, abandoned. Theres a need to establish a clean slate, as the BPR Online Learning Center teaches us.Business process re-engineering, just like the DMAIC in Six Sigma, presupposes a series of stages: stage 1 involves a definition of the project its rationale, objectives and scope. Stage 2 covers the entire learning process wherein we obtain as much information as we can about our employees, customers, suppliers and competitors including non-competitors and align that new information with technology. Armed with this knowledge, the next stage stage 3 - is to set up our mission. Others call it a vision of the future. This requires a new set of business processes. Once weve determined the desired outcome of this transition, we move on to the next stage which calls for a plan of action that allows us to measure the gap between our companys present state and where we want it to go.When we get to this stage, solutions logically follow. If youre still wondering what distinguishes business process improvement from business process re-engineering, think of the starting point: are you starting from an existing process and want to improve on it, or do you want to start from scratch? Thanks to Information TechnologyJump to globalization. Were ushering in new technologies and theyre coming faster than we can learn them. Theres also this whole new talk about customer relationship management (CRM) strategies. Were huffing and puffing and bursting at the seams. Businesses that have not adapted to global trends or introduced newer technologies into their operations will be clobbered by the competition. Todays companies cannot afford to sit back and watch while others struggle with changes in the industry. Thanks to information technology and the creation of new business models, the world of e-commerce has given new meaning to the way we do business. As Hui-Liang Tsai puts it, e-commerce is no longer a way to gain competitive advantage, it is a competitive imperative. (Information Technology and Business Process Re-engineering: New Perspectives and Strategies, Praeger Publishers, Connecticut, 2003). While companies are trying to keep up with technologies, customers are also changing. They are more demanding and are never satisfied. They fall out of love, and dont necessarily have to explain why. Picture the speed with which information is transmitted with just a click of the mouse. It used to be that urgent documents had to be couriered by special messenger or faxed immediately; today, documents are electronically portable. Mr. Tsai says that this phenomenon alone is producing a new crop of workers he calls them knowledge workers. We are looking at the transformation of industrial society into an information society.Progress in information technology is only one of the many reasons why companies have embraced business process re-engineering. If organizations desperately want to succeed, first they need information truckloads of it. Second, they need to know how to turn that information to their advantage. The practice of business process re-engineering can refine a lot of that information into digestible parts.
